Vatican Tribunal Upholds Suspension for Father Michael Black
DIOCESE-Father Michael Black, a priest of the Rockford Diocese ordained in 2000, is suspended following a recent decision of the Supreme Tribu- nal of the Apostolic Signatura, the Vaticans highest court. Father Blacks ministry has been restricted since Novem- ber 2015, and due to his refusal to recognize the legitimacy of the decree that restricted his ministry and his repeated vio- lations of it, a penal process concerning the violations was initiated. At the conclusion of that pe- nal process in August 2020, a decree was issued which im- posed upon Father Black the penalty of suspension prohib- iting him from celebrating the sacraments both publicly and privately. Father Black appealed that decision to the Congregation for the Clergy in Rome which subsequently recognized the legitimacy of the restrictions on Father Blacks ministry, af- irmed&that&he&is&obligated&to& adhere to those restrictions, and determined that his appeal had no basis in law or in fact. Father Black subsequently appealed the decision from the Congregation for the Clergy to the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura. The Signatura recently sent notification& that& sather& nlack& did not complete all the re- quirements for his appeal to the Signatura within the time limit given to him by the Signatura. As a result, the Signatura de- clared his appeal concluded. Therefore, the previous deci- sion of the Congregation for the Clergy stands, and Father Black is bound to obey it. At this time, Father Black remains obligated to abide by the restrictions to his ministry and the penalty of suspension meaning he continues to have no permission to engage in ministry or to celebrate Mass or the sacraments publicly or privately. AURORA-Father William Etheredge, Area Superinten- dent and Chief Administra- tive&icer&at&lurora&oentral& Catholic High School (ACC), will conclude his service at the high school and transition to a parish assignment when a suc- cessor is hired. Father Etheredge made the announcement&seb9&FV&to&staff& and on March 2 to students and families, so the search for a new Area Superintendent for Aurora Central Catholic High School can begin, accord- ing to diocesan Superinten- dent of Catholic Schools, Vito DeFrisco. After meeting earlier in Feb- ruary with Bishop of Rock- ford, David Malloy, Father Etheredge accepted an invita- tion to take an assignment as a parish pastor. His new parish assignment will be announced later this year when his suc- cessor at ACC is selected, and he will continue at ACC until then. My time at Aurora Cen- tral& oatholic& has& been& filled& with many blessings, and I am very grateful to the entire ACC community for their sup- port through the years. I am confident& that& the& rich& tradi- tion of Catholic educational excellence at Aurora Central Catholic will continue under the guidance of a new princi- pal, Father Etheredge said in his announcement to parents. Father Etheredge has led the ACC family of families and staff&for&the&past&FF&years9& While clergy assignments can be announced at any time according to the canon law of the Catholic Church, many priests are assigned and reas- signed at the time new priests are ordained. Ordination for the Diocese of Rockford for 2022 will be celebrated June 4.
